Why I rec this fic: One of the things I love do to in Final Fantasy 12 is exploring the towns/settlements and talk with the NPCs the world feels lived in and they have such variate characters and even little arcs, it’s a joy. Rabanstre as a bonus is also our home port, and I adore hearing all the people who are part of Vaan (and Penelos) community – this story is a sweet little backstory for two of them.

Why I Rec This Fic: I am picky about fanworks with Fran and Balthiers relationship, but I like how it is portrayed here, they are very very used to each other/know eachother very well.
The sound of heels on pavement travels along the deserted street, breaking Balthier out of his musings. He stands up, patting the dirt from the back of his pants, and watches as Fran approaches him. She's carrying a small parcel in her hands, wrapped in a kitchen towel. When she comes to his side, he points at it with his chin, and she just extends him the parcel, no words exchanged. He unties the knot at the top. The ends of the towel fall to the sides, revealing a wooden basket containing three balls of golden fried dough. Crab cakes, the Whitecap's specialty. Reddas himself had recommended them when he first flew the group from Draklor to Balfonheim. The smell is mouth-watering. Balthier leans the side of his hip against the balustrade pole, swallowing a lump in his throat. "If you make me cry over crab cakes, Fran, I swear to God..." The corner of the Viera's mouth turns up. "Blame the hunger. You must be starving." And she is right, as usual; the last time he ate, Reddas and his father were still alive. He attacks the first cake voraciously, feeling its salty crust melt in his mouth. "How was lunch?"

Why I Rec This Fic: This fic wrecked me when i first found it and it still wrecks me. The writing style is beautiful.

Why I Rec This Fic: I specially like the inclusion of the other people Penelo thinks of (Monid who got beaten up; Leli who didn’t dance anymore; Bronif who smuggled weapons for the resistence) it does make the world feel more lived in, but also, people talk about her and Vaan not having a place in the story and why yes it could have been handled better I ADORE walking though rabanastre and talking to NPCs and hearing how much they were part of a community - i think thematically it is important that this non royal people are part of freeing their home as protagonists.
Penelo knew that working late and breaking curfew was a bad idea. But Migelo’s delivery had come in late and Vaan had run off to Faram knew where so she’d stayed to help – she liked Migelo and he looked out for the orphans and streetkids and it was good to have a few extra gil in her pocket, just in case. Except she didn’t feel so good about it now, walking home alone after curfew. Everyone else had gone in hours ago and the streets of Rabanastre, so loud and crowded during the day, were dark and empty and creepy. Maybe Lowtown wasn’t the nicest place to live but at least it was warm and friendly, not like up here on the surface streets.

Why I Rec This Fic: This fic has some wonderful worldbuilding, an execllent Balthier voice, its also quite touching.
"You make a habit to allow orphans to drink to excess?" he queries delicately.
The man snorts. "Only on a," and here he says a word that Balthier neither understands nor fully catches, which he takes to mean it is, indeed, a Dalmascan custom, "And only when they can pay. Vaan dumped a couple hunnerd gil at me earlier. Wasn't gonna question it."
Balthier is not a wet nurse, dammit. He is a sky pirate and before that he was a judge magister. That does not stop him from being forced to flag down one of Vaan's merry band of orphans.

Why I Rec This Fic: It is funny and super sweet. It is tagged with „Unresolved Romantic Tension“ but it is not drama about it instead its more about partnership and the relationships are portayed with real easy love (bickering and physical contact – the general feel of knowing eachother).
It was going to be an easy job. If by ‘easy’ you meant ‘in Archadia’ and by ‘in Archadia’ you meant ‘Larsa needed a hand’ and by ‘Larsa needing a hand’ you meant ‘going to an Archadian fete’ and by ‘going to a fete you meant ‘having to wear something that actually had sleeves.’ That last part Vaan was taking some issue with. He kept picking and plucking and looking generally miserable and confused.

Why I Rec This Fic: After discovering my love for letter fics I find more and more for that, suddenly they seem to appear everywhere. It´s funny and despite the summary uncomplicated fluffy.
I hope you know that Vaan and I are frowning very hard in your direction about how you kept this a secret. Hard enough that I'm sure you can feel it even though you're halfway across the continent, so when you get this letter think back and try to remember if you ever suddenly felt like someone was feeling disapprovingly towards you a few weeks ago because that would be us.
